Scholarships
On Friday evening, April 30, 2010, the auditions for the 2010 Suffolk AGO scholarships and Elsener Award were held at St. James’ Church in Setauket. The Suffolk Chapter is pleased to announce that Suffolk AGO College Scholarships were awarded as follows: 1st place to Brent Trubia ($1,000) and 2nd place to Bill Roslak ($500). The Elsener Award winners were: Jessalyn Christen, in 1st place ($500) and in a 2nd place tie: Theresa Mary Bissex and Vito Reciniello ($250 each). Congratulations to all and keep up the good work!

Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Carol Weitner, Scholarship Chair, for coordinating the auditions. Thanks also to St. James Church and to Director of Music, Jim Sheridan, for providing a venue for the auditions. In addition, we thank our esteemed judges, Tom Bailey and Wayne Dieterich, and Deanna Muro for providing technical support with audio equipment. Awards will be presented at the Scholarship Awards Recital on May 23, 2010 4 pm at Sts. Philip and James Church in St. James.  Congratulations to all the winners!

The Suffolk Chapter of the American Guild of Organists is also pleased to announce its seventh annual Scholarship program for organ students from Suffolk County.


At least two scholarships will be awarded: up to $1000 for a student pursuing organ studies in college (a student currently enrolled in college, or a high school senior about to enter college); and up to one $500 or two $250 scholarships for high school students studying organ privately.

Audition:
Auditions for these scholarships will be held on Friday evening, April 30, 2010 at St. James RC Church, 429 Rte. 25A (about 1/2 mile east of Nicolls Road) in Setauket.

Requirements:
Students and/or their teachers must be members of the AGO to be eligible for this scholarship.

Repertoire for students competing for the COLLEGE scholarship:  a Prelude/Toccata and Fugue or Trio Sonata by J.S. Bach, a piece from the 19th century, a piece from the 20th or 21st centuries, and two stanzas of one of the following hymns:  "Lasst uns erfreuen," "Sine nomine," or "Ein' feste Burg."

Repertoire for students competing for the HIGH SCHOOL scholarship:  one piece by J.S. Bach, and a second piece either from the 19th, 20th, or 21st centuries, and two stanzas of one of the following hymns:  "Hyfrydol," "Lobe den Herren," or "St. Anne."

Students who are currently enrolled in a college who cannot audition in person may submit a recording. The tape or CD must by unedited and must be received by April 30, 2010. It should be mailed to Dr. Carol Weitner as specified on the application form.

Application:
The application must be filled out by the student, and received no later than April 15, 2010.  The student must also enclose a non-refundable registration fee of $20 payable to "Suffolk Chapter, AGO." 
Non-refundable application fee of $20 payable to Suffolk Chapter AGO should accompany each application.

Practice:
Students competing for the college scholarship will be allowed up to four hours of practice time the week of the auditions; students competing for the high school scholarship will have up to three hours of practice time during that week.  Information regarding practice time will be sent to each person by mid-April. 

Award:
The winners will be notified following the audition, and will be publicly acknowledged at the Scholarship Award recital by Nicole Cochran at Saints Philip and James RC Church in St. James on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at 4:00 pm.  (Please note that his is NOT the same church where the auditions were held).

Elsener Organ Works, Inc. is pleased to announce the fifth annual Elsener Award


A scholarship in the amount of $1000 is to be given to a beginning organ student of any age.  

Requirements: 
To be eligible for this award, students must be from Nassau or
Suffolk Counties, and must not have been studying organ for more than one year or up to 12 months; however, no previous organ study is required.

Auditions/Practice:
Auditions for this award will be held on Friday, April 30, 2010 at  St. James RC Church, 429 Rte. 25A (about 1/2 mile east of Nicolls Road) in Setauket.  Applicants will be asked to play one piece, either for piano or organ, as well as two stanzas of any hymn (this can be from any hymnal, or any book containing simplified hymn arrangements, such as those by Wayne Leupold.)  They will also be asked to submit a brief paragraph about why they would like to study the organ.

If requested, applicants for this award will be allowed up to one hour of practice time at the church the week of the audition.  Practice time will be scheduled after all application forms have been received.

Additional Information:
The prize money for this award is intended to be used for organ lessons, or other organ-related expenses, such as organ music, organ shoes, etc.  Winners will receive the award money in installments of $250.  The student's teacher must certify that the student has used the first $250 for the above purposes in order for the student to receive the next installment.  The entire award must be used within one year of receiving the first installment.

Students of any age who previously studied organ, but had to quit due to financial reasons, may also apply for this award.  Please send a letter to Dr. Carol Weitner explaining your situation.  If you are interested in resuming lessons, you will be expected to audition following the guidelines above.

If the winner of this award is under the age of 17, we request a statement of commitment, signed by the student, parent, and organ instructor.  The Suffolk AGO Chapter will provide the winner with a list of organ teachers from Nassau and Suffolk Counties.


Application:
To apply for this award, please complete a brief application form, enclose a $20 application fee payable to Suffolk Chapter, AGO and a brief paragraph about why you would like to study the organ, and send everything by April 15, 2010 to: Dr. Carol Weitner, Scholarship Chairperson, as specified on the application form.


Award: 
Winner(s) will receive the first installment of their award at the Scholarship Award recital by Nicole Cochran on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at 4 pm at Saints Philip and James RC Church in St. James.  The winner must be present at this recital to receive the award.
