Chapter Programs

Friday, September 25, 2009  6 pm  Annual Potluck Dinner

Member-at-Large Alan Lush has invited us to kick off the new year at his home in Amityville.  Details concerning food assignments and other information are in the newsletter.  New members especially welcome.

October 30, 2009  Organ Crawl, Part One (South Shore)

The program begins at 2 pm with high English Tea at the mansion on the grounds of the Bayard-Cutting Arboretum (440 Montauk Highway, Great River), with tea sandwiches, desserts, and pastries, and scones with cream and jam.  It's an elegant room from a bygone era wich prepares us for a look into another century.

At 4 pm we will move down the road to St. John's Episcopal Church of Oakdale (875 Montauk Highway, Oakdale), built in 1765, reputedly the third oldest church on Long Island and the second oldest in Suffolk County.  Its Jardine 2-manual, 3-rank organ is  a historic instrument whose stops will be demonstrated for us.

At 4:30 pm, directly across from the church we enter St. John's University, Oakdale campus (500 Montauk Highway, Oakdale), once known as Indian Neck Hall, the estate of Frederick G. Bourne, the Singer Sewing Machine magnate.  There we will visit a J.W. Steer mechanical action orgram built in 1870 and moved to Oakdale in 1974 from Blessed Sacrament in Albany, NY.

See the October issue of Suffolk Soundings newsletter for details about RSVP deadline and registration.

Wednesday, November 11, 2009  1 pm  Organ Crawl, Part Two (New York City)

A visit to the Church of All Saints (RC) in NYC on the Veterans Day holiday.

We will form car pools to drive into NYC together, have lunch at a local restaurant, and then explore the church (the last designed by James Renwick, Jr., who also designed St. Patrick's Cathedral and Grace Church) and the instrument (a vintage Roosevelt/Welte-Tripp organ).  Pictures and details are available on the NYC Chapter website.

There will be an open console.  See the November issue of the Suffolk Soundings newsletter for RSVP information and other details.
